The Sand Goanna is a large species of monitor lizard endemic to Australia. Their preferred habitat are woodlands and grasslands where they shelter in tree hollows or excavate large burrows. In order to detect prey they use their forked tongue to 'taste the air' and identify the strength and direction of a particular scent. They will usually feed on snakes, smaller lizards, birds, mice and large insects.
